First Boot

Instructions for first time boot up of the GridGuard Virtual Appliance

Boot up Machine

Once the virtual appliance has been created on the hypervisor of your choice, boot up the virtual appliance within the hypervisor.

Login with default credentials

Enter username: gridadmin

Enter password: gridguard

 

License Agreement

The first time you login, the license agreement is shown within the hypervisor's console/SSH session.

Scroll to page down and get to the bottom of the agreement

Accept License Agreement

Please read and understand the End User License Agreement prior to accepting.

Once you get to the bottom of the screen, type 'YES' to accept the agreement. (Case Sensitive)

You must accept the agreement to proceed. If you do not accept the agreement, the virtual appliance will shutdown gracefully.

Specify Network Settings

The system will prompt you to specify the network configuration for the two default network adapters. If you do not need the secondary one at this time. Deactivate it via the nmtui configuration console.

Updating Host name
  1. Log onto the gridguard appliance via SSH using the gridadmin id
  2. Execute command 'sudo nmtui'
  3. Select the 'Edit a connection' option and press enter.
  1. Select the appropriate network adapter and press Enter.
Updating IP Address
  1. Tab over to 'Show' on the 'IPv4 CONFIGURATION' entry. Press Enter to display IPv4 configuration. 
  1. Set the following fields:

Addresses: Add IP address in IPv4/CIDR format

Gateway: Add IP address for network gateway

DNS servers: Added DNS nameservers IPs. Syferlock recommends add at least more than 1 DNS server.

When complete, tab to the 'OK' button and press the Enter button.

If you have multiple network adapters, repeat the previous process from Select a Network Adapter

Once done, press Enter on the 'Back' button to go back to the main nmtui screen.

 

Configuring Hostname

1. Log onto the gridguard appliance via SSH using the gridadmin id

2. Execute command 'sudo nmtui'

3. Select the 'Set system hostname' option and press enter.

Enter desired DNS compliant hostname. When finished, tab to 'OK' button and press Enter.

Once done with setting the IP configration and / or hostname, return to the inital screen and tab to the 'OK' button and press Enter to apply the settings. If you wish to abort the changes, tab to 'Quit' and press Enter.

Once the settings have been accepted, the system will update the necessary files and generate default self-signed SSL certificates for the device.

You will now be asked to set the root password for the appliance.

The root id does not have the ability to SSH to the device. You will need to SSH to the device as 'gridadmin' and sudo to root to perform actions as the root id.

Note: Please make sure to save this password in a secure location as anyone with access to this password, can compromise the security of the appliance.

You will now be asked to set the password for the 'gridadmin' id. This is the id that will be used for accessing the virtual appliance using SSH and the browser based 'Administration and Configuration Console'.

Note: Please make sure to save this password in a secure location as anyone with access to this password, can compromise the security of the appliance.

Reboot Appliance

At this point, you will be prompted to reboot the appliance to apply all the configuration settings that have been specified.

Press any key to reboot the appliance

Install the Latest System Patch

On the following link (Upgrades & Patches) you will find the latest patches.  Follow the instructions within the latest version to download and apply the patch.  

Then return to this document to continue.

Access the Administration & Configuration Console (ACC)

Access the Administration & Configuration Console (ACC)

Open browser and navigate to the following URL : https://<gridguard server ip>:8443/admin/

You will be prompted with a warning stating that the SSL certificate is a self-signed certificate. Accept the warning.

You will now be prompted to enter a  username and password to login.

Enter User Name: gridadmin

Enter Password:  This has been reset to 'gridguard' by the installation of the patch.

Click 'Log In' 

Setup NTP Servers

Setup NTP Servers
  1. Select the 'System Management' option
  2. Select the 'NTP' tab
  3. If you do not want to use the default NTP servers, delete them as necessary
  4. Click the 'Add NTP Server' button to add a new NTP servers. This may take a few moments. The ACC attempts it verify the NTP server. If you put in a slow or invalid server, it may take a bit to respond. It is best to put enter in a odd number of NTP servers.

If your organization does not have dedicated NTP servers, please add:

0.pool.ntp.org

1.pool.ntp.org

and 2.pool.ntp.org
